Stop the Learn Loss during the "Summer Slide": Phonics, Fluency and School Readiness
Solution? Your Local Library and an Early childhood reading tutor, or K-3 reading tutor.
The good news? Just a few intentional habits will keep your child's brain active, confident, and ready for the upcoming school year.
1. Dive Into Summer Reading Challenges
Have your child read just 20 minutes a day and improve their vocabulary and comprehension. I recommend motivating them by going to your local library and checking out as many books as are allowed in a 4 week period. Have your child pick out interesting books of their choice upon your approval, and you pick out books to read to them.
Currently the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District’s Summer Challenge runs until July 15. Kids can earn prizes just for logging 20 hours of reading. Whether it is comic books, fantasy novels, or science fiction, the goal is simply to keep them turning pages.

Participants of all ages can earn rewards (including books and food vouchers) by reading between June 12-23, 2026, the half-way point in a Summer Challenge. You can log your reading minutes and claim prizes.
When my children were young, I enrolled them in library summer programs for years. They love reading now, and at that time they loved the rewards from the library. 😊
2. Pair Reading with Personalized Support
While independent reading builds habit, targeted support builds mastery. Summer is the absolute best time to address the specific academic gaps that your child struggled with during the school year.
Without the pressure of daily homework and tests, students can learn at their own pace, ask questions freely, and actually enjoy the learning process.
3. Build a Custom Summer Learning Routine
You do not need to duplicate a strict school day to see results. A balanced summer routine can look like this:
• Morning: 30 minutes of independent or shared reading.
• Weekly: A trip to the local library to pick out new books.
• Targeted Focus: One or two structured tutoring sessions per week to reinforce core concepts.
