"Why My Child in 2nd Grade Can't Read: 5 Signs of ADHD Reading Struggles"

"Why My Child in 2nd Grade Can't Read: 5 Signs of ADHD Reading Struggles"

Is your child in 2nd grade and having trouble reading? Does your child need reading intervention because he/she may possibly have ADHD?

5 Signs of ADHD Reading Struggles:

1. Attention -

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) has now been combined with the term Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). ADD is not used by doctors anymore.  It means that a person has difficulty keeping focused attention.

There sometimes is inconsistent performance. The child will do well one time, and poorly the next because they have difficulty concentrating.

2. Impulsive -

A child may tend to be impulsive, to do things too quickly without thinking through the problem and get into trouble because they haven't thought through the risks they are taking. The student will skip lines, miss words, replace words, and/or have visual tracking difficulties from the lapse of attention.

They will race through the text, skipping punctuation and not taking a breath. By making the text all run together to finish quickly, it won't make sense and the child is unable to summarize what they just read.

3. Guessing at Words -

Students may guess words based on the first letter instead of carefully decoding or sounding out the word. If the child doesn't know their phonics, then this becomes extremely difficult.

They will guess based on the general shape of the word, or replace it with a synonym, or word that is similar, that they think might fit the context of the story.

4. Sight Words and Known Words Mistakes -

Even "sight words" that the child is familiar with become careless errors; children even omit endings such as -s, -ing, or -ed because of inattention or lack of knowledge of basic sounds or phonics.

5. Mental Fatigue -

The constant effort to stay focused, decode, and track causes mental exhaustion compared to the child's peers. This shows up as restlessness and fidgeting while reading.

Weak working memory makes it hard to hold earlier parts of the story read in their mind, and the child becomes mentally exhausted.

Do you know anyone who likes to do hard things?  No wonder the child dislikes reading, and wants to avoid it. They become exhausted when they concentrate.

What are the Results of ADHD Reading Struggles?

  1. Your child is working hard but getting frustrated and discouraged.
  2. They develop a negative self-image and view themselves differently from their peers.
  3. They don't know why they are struggling, and they begin to think something is wrong with them.
  4. They may begin having behavior issues to hide the difficulty, rather than be found out that they can't read.
  5. Without intervention and support, they will become labeled "lazy," and not caring because they are viewed as not trying hard enough.
  6. They may feel alone and are trying to survive.

These are common signs of ADHD struggles, and a learning disability. It doesn’t take long to fall behind, and it is noticed in school as having difficulties and sometimes behavior problems.

The longer the lack of support, the harder the student will have to work to catch up.  If it continues without intervention and support, it will affect performance throughout life.

It is important to find a tutor who understands learning disabilities and the impact the condition can have on a person's life.

Not many years ago, little was known about how to help a person with a learning disability.

However, students with learning disabilities also could be described with many strengths, and their brains are likely to be more specialized than average in other areas that compensate for his or her weakness.  Your child is amazing!
